Overview

Calcium Carbide Reagent for Moisture Testers

Calcium Carbide Reagent for Soil & Aggregate Moisture Testing (10 lb Can)

Calcium Carbide reagent is used with moisture testers to rapidly determine the moisture content of soils and aggregates in both field and laboratory environments. When combined with a sample in the sealed test chamber, the reagent reacts with moisture to generate acetylene gas, allowing technicians to obtain accurate moisture content results within minutes. Supplied in a convenient 10 lb (4.5 kg) can, this reagent supports routine moisture testing for construction materials, geotechnical evaluation, and quality control applications.

This widely used testing method delivers fast, reliable moisture measurements without the delays associated with traditional oven-dry methods.

How Calcium Carbide Moisture Testing Works

Brief explanation of process:

  • A 20 g sample is placed in the moisture tester chamber

  • A measured amount of calcium carbide reagent is added

  • Two pulverizing steel balls are included with the sample

  • The chamber is sealed and agitated, causing the reagent to react with moisture in the material

  • The reaction generates acetylene gas, increasing chamber pressure

  • The tester gauge converts the pressure reading into moisture content
