Specific Gravity

Specific Gravity

Are you in the market for equipment and accessories to perform specific gravity tests on sand, coarse, and fine aggregates? There are two main tests that you can conduct to determine the specific gravity of sand or aggregates: the coarse aggregate specific gravity test and the fine aggregate specific gravity test. These tests both evaluate the density of an aggregate compared to water, so let’s dig into the details of each one and discuss how Forney can help you test your aggregate samples.

For coarse aggregates, you’ll want one of our coarse aggregate specific gravity sets. Each set comes ready to conduct specific gravity tests, as it includes a wire density basket with a handle and a polyethylene pail — simply suspend the wire basket in water to conduct your tests.

To determine the specific gravity of sand or other fine materials, you’ll want one of our specific gravity and absorption test sets for fine aggregates. This set comes with a pycnometer — a one-quart threaded glass jar with a rubber gasketed brass top tapered to a ⅜-inch hole — along with a conical mold and a tamper.

Forney also stocks a variety of bottle and volumetric flask options that allow you to determine the specific gravity of sand and aggregate samples for small samples. We offer several different sizes of Gay Lussac flasks with glass stoppers for these applications. Of course, Forney also has every accessory you’ll need for specific gravity testing. Don’t hesitate to ask one of Forney’s expert representatives if you have any questions about the many great products in our specific gravity test supply inventory!
