The FORNEY Automatic Soil Processor dramatically reduces the time and labor required to prepare soil samples for Proctor and other moisture/density relationship tests in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO standards. Designed for geotechnical labs handling cohesive materials—including fat clays, lean clays, and moist soils—this pneumatically operated system transforms what was once a tedious, manual task into a fast, hands-free operation.

With the ability to process up to 40 lb (18 kg) of cohesive soil in just 15 minutes, the processor frees up technicians to focus on more productive work. Simply load your prepared soil onto the replaceable No. 4 screen, close the weighted lid, and flip the switch. The vertical force of the lid, combined with the lateral movement of the screen tray, breaks down the sample without grinding—preserving particle integrity throughout the process.

For optimal performance, soil samples should be reasonably broken down prior to processing. Large clods—particularly in wet or highly plastic clays—should be reduced into smaller, manageable pieces (e.g., by hand or with a hammer) before loading. Excessively wet or cohesive materials may also benefit from slight drying or additional pre-preparation to ensure efficient processing and consistent results. The processor is designed to refine and condition material—not to fracture large, dense masses.

The unit automatically shuts off when the lid is within 1/4 in (6 mm) of the screen, signaling that the cycle is complete. The integrated air hose makes cleanup quick and easy by blasting the screen clean. Extra pans and screen inserts in different mesh sizes are available to support high-volume or varied testing operations, with convenient cabinet storage to keep everything organized and within reach.
