Penetrometer - Soils

Do you need to determine the shear strength or compressive strength of a soil sample? By using a soil penetrometer, you can perform tests in field or lab settings. To use a penetrometer for soil testing, all you need to do is insert it into the soil, driving the rod into the ground at a consistent, steady rate. The penetrometer test method involves taking note of the depth where the pressure exceeds 300 PSI and also the level where the pressure falls beneath 300 PSI. By evaluating these measurements, you can determine where the top and bottom of the soil’s compaction zone are located.

Forney sells penetrometers of the highest quality, providing consistent results and reliable performance. Our dual-mass dynamic cone penetrometer with a quick-connect end can efficiently determine California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values for pavement base, sub-base, and sub-grades. This penetrometer can evaluate soil shear strength for road construction in the field and can reach depths of up to six feet. This fully featured set comes with a dual-mass dynamic cone penetrometer hammer, a threaded connection, a drive rod, a disposable cone adapter, 25 disposable cones, a scale guide set, a wrench set, and more.

For quick and easy testing, you might be interested in our pocket penetrometer. This lightweight, portable penetrometer for soil testing provides direct readings instantly for applications in the field or in the lab. This spring-operated tool pushes a loading piston into the soil, while the permanent scale on the piston barrel displays unconfined compressive strength readings.
